Writing an Ode

When we think of odes we usually think of the Subway commercial were Michael Strahan is talking about how good subway melts are. This week in language arts we will be writing an ode. Please post your odes as a comment to this post. There are lots of odes to be found on www.poetry.org Kudos to Ms. Katz for recommending this cool website on our blog last week. was recommended by Ms. Katz on her commment last week. Many of our bloggers have also told about a favorite poem which can be found on this site too.

  1. Ode to the Forgotten:
Ode to the people who were forgotten
They were once loved and cared for

    Ode to their lives
    Everyday they hurt
    While in desperation for love
    and generosity.

    Ode to their heart
    That was torn apart viciously
    With little consideration
    Of their inner feelings

    Ode to their memories
    That bring back happiness
    Or to the ones
    That are very vague.

Ode to those who have tried
    Those who haven't given up
The ones that will keep climbin
For them life hasn't been easy.

I found this on www.poemhunter.com, and to be more specific, at: http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/ode-to-the-forgotten/

The poem reminds me of our day to day life. Some people are forgotten temporarily, but the people who die can soon be forgotten forever.

  4. This is a poem I found while searching blogs about odes. This one is about depression and makes me think of times in life that are hard, but also joyful, because we couldn't tell the difference of depression and happiness if we didnt encounter them in our lives. It can be found via this link:
    http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/depression-is/

Depression is Loving someone with nothing in return,
Depression is Slowly living instead of jumping head first,
Depression is Acknowledging the mistake but without learn,
Depression is Not trying, giving into your lifes curse.

Depression is Cutting and cutting thinking you cant stop,
Depression is Staying quiet thinking no-one will care,
Depression is Floating around with the desire to drop,
Depression is Ignoring the people who always seem to be there.

Depression is Trying to end the life youve been given,
Depression is Watching other people watch you,
Depression is Giving up instead of being hard driven,
Depression is Depression, do you feel it too?

  5. here is my ode to death

    Ode to Death

    Whatever we do
It finds its way towards us,

How much we try to escape it
    But one day we fail.

It’s always a fight to survive
    But we never win,

We try so hard but never win
What kills us is its fear,

The eternal battle will rage on
And every time there be one winner,
    Death…

  6. i walk into the store
    my stomach starts to grumble
this tasty aroma fills my nose
    as i begin to mumble
i slowly walk to the desk
    im hungry as can be
i lay down the money quick
    im filled up with glee
i wait eagerly for my food
but i get my money back,
when i sadly ask the cashier why
he says "were out of big macs."

  7. Ode to hamburgers
    Yummy and warm
    Good when cold
    Buns of white bread
    Slabs of meat in between
    Grease running down the side.
The cheese glistens in the light
    Layer upon layer of lettuce
Red tomatoes and pickle mesh together
    The creation of heave
    Ode to Hamburgers
The first bite to the last
    Makes me feel euphoric.

  8. This is my poem:
    Ode to Earth
Earth is shaped like an ostrich egg
Just floating alone in a vast universe

    It is where we live
People let us be proud of it

Beautiful life, trees, and the ocean
Beautiful sparkling stars light years away

If we do not protect it, who will my friends
Earth has supported us for so long, let’s do our part now

Earth is shaped like an ostrich egg
It is getting smaller because of our wild and careless needs

Earth is just floating alone in a vast universe
It still supports us, so Earth thanks a lot for your entirety

  9. An ode to hope

Hope is the thing with feathers
Hope is the thing with feathers
    That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
    And never stops at all,

    And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
    That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chillest land,
    And on the strangest sea;
    Yet, never, in extremity,
