Reading Projects

"I can't set this book down!" Have you felt this way about a book you've been reading lately? It'd be fun to hear about:

1. Conclusions or Inferences that we're making as we read
2. Quotations from our books and our thoughts about these quotes
3. Personal connections to the book and how the stories relate to us.

  1. Monster by Walter Dean Myers is unlike any other book I've read. I love how the author puts us into the mind of Steve Harmon.
One of the first witness that Steve recounts in his "Screenplay" is Salvatore Zinzi. On pages 34-35 the prosecutor Sandra Petrocelli uses Zinzi to get information about Steve's alleged participation in a murder. I noticed that Zinzi told Police what he knew about the crime while he was in jail.
Later on pages 100-101 Petrocelli questions Osvaldo Cruz to share information about the murder. Osvaldo says that he's testifying in order to take a lesser punishment. Petrocelli asks Osvaldo, "Are you testifying because you're getting a deal from the government?" Osvaldo then replies, "Yeah". Since Osvaldo is admitting to participating in the murder and he is "getting a deal" by giving information, I am not sure I agree that this evidence should be used against Steve in this case.

  3. Yhe way the main character tells the story is a different type of writing style. Walter Dean Myers seems like a fun author. Has anyone read other books that they'd recommend by this author?

The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleishman is another great chapter book! I am enjoy the plot twist in how Prince Brat is experiencing what it feels like to be at the mercy of someone else's mistakes. This story has a lot of expressions, though. Sometimes it can be hard to understand, Gaw.

  6. I really like the book called My Teacher Turns into a TYRANNOSAURUS. The book was about the boy who got three problems to get to his school. He has to walk by a beast and three vampires and his teacher turns into a TYRANNOSAURUS. It remindes me when I first came here. I was also very scared because everything was new and I did not speak English. I did not like going to school.

  7. Slvana,
It sounds like you put yourself in Jemmy's shoes when you were reading this book. I feel the same way about this book because the Prince got away with everything and Jemmy always gets the punishment. I don't think it's fair. I agree with your thinking Slvana.

  10. Pascal,
I felt this way too because in Syria the teachers beat us with rulers. The teachers in Syria were like the Tyrannosaurus. In America, I feel more comfortable now because I speak English now and I know how to do the homework by myself. The teachers now look normal not like dinosaurs.

  13. I agree with Mr. Hull, Monster is a very fascinating book because it is written as a play and the author introduces us to the lifestyle of the main character Steve. It describes what he was afflicted with, James, Osvaldo and other people he was with during the incident. What made me like the book was the details, the time transitions and how the author used different writtings for steve and the play. It draws the readers attention into the book

  14. I enjoy my book because it has lots of suspense and is full with great words which makes it easy to picture the events in your head.I also have a prediction.I predict Irena will end up back home and find out that her parents are dead because they are under German Occupied terroritory.I think this because during this time in history there was mass genocide going on of ethnic identies thought to be against Nazi exsistance.

  15. In my book Monster it seemed as if steve would never be proven innocent. He is not guilty of the murder but everyone just assumes that he is. To me it seems that even his parents dont' know wether to believe steve's side of the story or not, they are scared to find out wether their son is some kind of monster. Steve's lawyer o'brian is having a hard time defending his case because all of the evidence points to him. And as i read i look forward to seeing how steve's case turns out.

  16. I also agree with Mr. Hull. So far I am on pg. 135 out of the book "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers. So far, Steve claimed that he was "innocent" while he was once in jail. Also, Steve once told us in one of his diary enteries that he had wanted to be like "them", or the people who had committed the murder.

Steve must have been an outcast in his possibly ghetto type school. Now, in order to get away, the other people are simply using Steve as a tool to get away from jail.

A connection to our life would be that humans are monsters to this world. A person can be a monster in many different ways, either good or bad, but it depends on the person's choice. That is a lesson from the book.

  18. I agree with mr.haul as well as akbar, because the format or the way the book is written is different than how books usually are and because of that it captures my interest. Like akbar said this book is written as a play, this style of writing is suitable to it because you can act it out because these are the types of things happening in our present world. also similar to what akbar said with each characer comes different point of view and different stories since this book is about a case.

  19. The book I am currently reading is party girl by Lynne Ewing. Till now the book has been going great. The book is quite interesting even though I am not such a mystery and drama book fan. Now moving on to the book details.
The book starts of in a funeral of girl who is the book's topic. Later in the funeral another girl is thinking about the good times with the girl who died. She mentions the name of the dead girl and the main character. their names are Ana and Kata. After a little bit about them, Kata then starts telling the story of how she is responsible about her death. She tells us that she told Ana to sneak out with her to a dance-off in an old warehouse. After they danced they walk off into the night and at night they confront a car. Out that car they see a sawed off shotgun. Kata quicly takes cover while Ana still stood not hiding or ducking. the car seems to be of a rival gang. Ana boldly shows her gang sign and says there gang name. The man hesitates but regains his powers and shoots her and drives off. Kata runs towrads her and feels the warm blood on her. From this point Kata starts to seek revenge for Ana.
This is the main story of the book and I am happy to write about this book.

  22. Thanks for sharing your blog about Shabanu Alma!

I think that all of our comments about the books are interesting. Albert, your book about the Holocaust relates to the play we read in class too. The dangers of living in an occupied country sound overwhelming.
Ahmed, your comment about how people are all Monsters is interesting. I'm glad that you're uncovering little lessons in these stories.
Kunal, your book sounds interesting as well. Kata's revenge of Ana's death sounds suspenseful.

It's fun to listen to you sharing about your books. I'm interested to find out whether our predictions are right?

  23. I'm reading the book called Monster By Walter Dean Myers and i think it is a really good book because the book is set up in a certain way kind of like a movie script so it lets you picture every scene in the book and what ever that is going on in the book.
